AT&T Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here is a list commonly asked questions about AT&T DSL and other services.

What is a firewall? Do I need one?

A firewall provides a virtual wall between your computer and the Internet, protecting your computer or network from attack. Attempts to break into computer networks often occur through Internet connections. Firewalls can be either hardware or software.

To help protect your personal information from potential hackers, AT&T Yahoo! offers a free, downloadable ZoneAlarm personal firewall to all Members.

To download the firewall software:

  • You must have one of the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
  • Visit http://www.zonelabs.com/sbc
  • Select the firewall version that suits you. Your AT&T Yahoo! membership includes the basic ZoneAlarm firewall software at no extra charge. Or you can choose the enhanced version, ZoneAlarm Pro, for an additional charge.

Can I connect two computers to the same high-speed Internet line with separate modems?

No. Placing two high-speed modems on the same high-speed Internet line and trying to connect both to the Internet at the same time will cause both high-speed modems to fail.

You can, however, share an Internet connection. Two technologies have evolved to allow your computers to share Internet access. You can create a small network (using standard networking products) without opening your computer up to sharing files, printers or privacy issues.

The easiest solution to implement would be a hardware-based router technology, such as the AT&T Wireless Gateway (2Wire HomePortal) device. You can turn off either computer and not affect the Internet access of the other computer.

The other technology for Internet sharing is a software-based solution, turning the primary computer which is connected to the high-speed Internet line into a gateway device. The software enables you to share multiple connections to a single Internet access point. That requires you to connect the computers which you want to share the Internet connection. Since this solution requires active software running on the primary computer, you must keep that computer powered up and connected to the high-speed Internet service at all times. A firewall application may or may not be available with this software. AT&T does not sell or recommend this software.

Either of these solutions will work with your AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service. We have more information available about our home and office networking products, as well as pricing and product configuration details in our online store.

Do you offer fee-based technical support services?

Technical support of high-speed Internet access service is available at no charge. Occasionally, there will be hardware or software which was not initially installed with our high-speed Internet service at the time of purchase. For these items, we offer optional services, such as an on-site service installation or our Support+ service. Please note, additional service charges may apply.
